Legong

Picture
A pair of Balinese dancers in full regalia, perform the “Legong” in unison.

Famed for its refined choreography involving facial expressions and hand movements as well as ornate headdresses and costumes, there are several types of Legong dance performed, entertaining audiences with renderings of the myths and legends found in Balinese culture.

Legong is believed to have originated as a form of royal court entertainment in the 19th century and was performed by girls that had not yet reached adolescence, although today’s dancers are usually adults of varying age. The rigorous training required to perfect the choreography would last many years and begin at a very early age but the potential rewards were great as dancers were highly valued in Balinese society and would often marry into the social elite.
